How to choose the right reach truck?
Multiple features will need to be considered, including minimum working aisle width, maximum loading requirements, and ground slope.
Minimum Working Aisle Conditions
In order to let the reach truck work smoothly in your workplace, you will need to pass three checks: U-turn space, 90-degree entry, and right-angle stacking.
U-turn space check
It is used to measure the clear width where the reach truck turns around.
Pass if: Clear width > Turning Radius * 2 + Safety Allowance (200 mm)
90-degree entry check
It is used to measure the clear width for the reach truck to enter the working aisles.
Pass if: Clear width > Turning Radius + Reach Truck Width + Safety Allowance (200 mm)
Right-angle stacking
It is used to measure the clear width between the two aisles to stack the pallets.
Pass if: Clear width > Reach Truck Width + Pallet Length + Safety Allowance (200 mm)
Maximum loading requirements
When the reach truck reaches the maximum height, make sure to add a 10–15% safety margin.
Ground slope
Calculate your workplace slope with the formula: slope % = rise / run * 100. If it is a 0.3 m rise over a 6 m run, it comes to a 5% slope. Compare with the reach truck’s gradeability, and make sure it keeps at least a 1–2% buffer.
Differences between reach truck and order picker
Although reach trucks and order pickers have a similar look, they are designed for different warehouse tasks. Reach trucks can lift and transport heavy goods to high racks around 6 to 12 meters. At the same time, the driving staff only need to stay on the ground level and use the forks to extend forks into the racks to complete the process. In contrast, order pickers lift both the driver and the controls, which means that the operator needs to handle and pick up items by themselves. Usually, these items are small cases or packages. Since those items are light, order pickers are built for lighter loads, they can undertake 100 to 200 kilograms in a single run and can reach 6 to 12 meters high. For reach trucks, they can undertake heavy loads of 1 to 2.5 tonnes. As a result, reach trucks are good to be used in warehouses for bulk goods and retail distribution. Order pickers are more suitable for commerce fulfilment and backroom activities.
