A narrow aisle forklift is purpose-built for the Australian warehouse where every square metre matters. Hangcha Australia supplies three main types: the reach truck for full-pallet storage at high rack levels (up to 13,000 mm and 3.0 t), the order picker for piece-picking in retail and e-commerce fulfilment, and the turret truck (VNA) for very narrow aisles below 1.6 m. Each narrow aisle forklift is available with lithium-ion or lead-acid power, supported by a 12-month warranty and 1–3 day delivery from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Use the comparison table and selection guide below to find the right model for your aisle width and load profile.

Narrow Aisle Forklift Scenario Picks
Full pallet handling + higher rack levels + regular put-away work
→ Choose a reach truck when your operation focuses on pallet storage, higher lifting and efficient handling at height.
Wider narrow aisles + heavier pallet loads + warehouse replenishment
→ Choose a reach truck for stronger lifting performance and smoother pallet movement through the warehouse.
Piece picking + direct shelf access + tighter picking aisles
→ Choose an order picker when operators need to access individual items quickly and work efficiently in narrow picking zones.
Retail distribution + e-commerce fulfilment + small-unit order handling
→ Choose an order picker when the job is focused on fast, accurate picking rather than full pallet transport.
Very narrow aisles + high-bay racking + maximum pallet density
→ Choose a turret truck (VNA truck) when your warehouse uses guided narrow aisles and the operation focuses on pulling more pallet positions out of the same floor area at greater heights.
High-throughput pallet put-away and retrieval + tall racking + flat warehouse floor
→ Choose a turret truck for fast, accurate pallet handling at height in a dedicated VNA zone, where reach trucks would lose efficiency due to aisle width.
Narrow Aisle Forklift FAQ
What counts as a narrow aisle, and how do I measure mine?
The figure that matters is Ast, the working aisle width a truck needs to complete a right angle stack. It is calculated from the truck width, turning radius and pallet size, plus a clearance allowance of around 200 mm. As a rough guide, reach trucks work in 2.7 to 3.0 m aisles, man-up order pickers in about 1.5 to 2.0 m, and turret trucks below 1.6 m. Measure the clear width between racking faces, not the rack centres. See our aisle width guide for the full calculation.
Reach truck, order picker or turret truck, which one do I need?
Choose a reach truck when you move full pallets in and out of racking with the operator on the ground, aisles are 2.7 m or wider, and pallets weigh up to 3.0 t. Choose an order picker when operators need to be raised to the rack to pick individual cartons rather than whole pallets. Choose a turret truck when aisles are below 1.6 m, racking is tall, and maximum pallet density is the priority.
Do turret trucks need a special floor or guidance system?
Yes. Turret trucks rely on wire guidance or rail guidance to travel safely at speed through very narrow aisles, and they need a flat, level concrete floor meeting a recognised flatness standard such as FEM or DIN. Reach trucks and order pickers also need even floors, but the tolerance is far less demanding. If your existing slab and racking layout do not meet turret truck requirements, a reach truck is the safer starting point.
What licence do I need to operate a narrow aisle forklift in Australia?
A High Risk Work Licence is required, and the class depends on the machine. Reach trucks and man-down turret trucks fall under class LF, forklift truck. Order pickers and any machine that raises the operator with the load fall under class LO, order picking forklift truck. An LF licence does not cover LO work. Confirm the class with your state or territory WHS regulator, and ask us about operator training.
Can narrow aisle forklifts work on ramps or uneven areas?
Check gradeability and ground clearance before you commit. Narrow aisle forklifts are optimised for smooth, flat warehouse floors and most are not suited to external ramps or yard surfaces. Keep a separate rough terrain forklift for the areas outside your racking zone.
Can I add attachments to a narrow aisle forklift?
Yes. Common options include fork positioners for handling mixed pallet sizes, camera systems for visibility at height, cold store packages, and load weighing. Note that attachments reduce residual capacity, so specify them at quoting stage rather than adding them later.
What warranty and support does Hangcha Australia provide?
All narrow aisle forklift models come with a 12-month warranty. Delivery from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane is typically 1 to 3 days for urgent orders. Support includes 24 hour phone assistance, on-site setup and operator handover, and a WorkSafe Victoria safety check. Most common genuine parts are stocked at the Melbourne branch and reach your site within a week.
