Lift height: up to 7,000 mm
Best for: soft, wet or loose ground, slopes and ramps, and frequent off-road or construction-site work
Key checks: loaded gradeability for your steepest ramp, tyre choice for the surface, and capacity at your target lift height.

2WD Rough Terrain Forklift

Capacity: 2.5 to 10.0 t (5.0 to 10 t available as 2WD/4WD)
Lift height: up to 7,000 mm
Best for: mixed sealed or unsealed yards, flatter surfaces, tighter turning, and lower running cost
Key checks: turning radius for your tightest area, 270 mm ground clearance against the worst surface you cross, and slope limits for occasional ramps.

Selection guide to the right rough terrain forklift

Ground conditions and traction

If more than about 30% of your working time is on soft, wet, loose or muddy ground, we recommend a 4WD rough terrain forklift for traction across all four wheels. For firm, mostly sealed or compacted surfaces, a 2WD model with 270 mm clearance is usually enough. On mixed sites, 4WD adds grip and confidence on bad ground, while 2WD is more agile and cheaper to run.

Load at height

Residual capacity drops as the mast extends, so size up rather than running a model at the top of its range. For loads up to 5.0 t in mixed yards, a 2.5 to 3.5 t class model (2WD or 4WD) is usually sufficient. If your frequent load is above 5.0 t, or you lift heavy loads near full mast height, choose the 5.0 to 10 t 2WD & 4WD model.

Slopes and gradeability

For regular loaded ramps, uneven access points or frequent hill-climb work, choose a 4WD model. Its 2WD/4WD switch and full-floating hydraulic transmission give it strong climbing grip. For flat to mild slopes on stable ground, a 2WD model handles the job at lower running cost.

Rough terrain forklift scenario picks

Soft or wet ground, frequent off-road, loads to 3.5 t
→ Choose the 2.5 to 3.5 t 4WD for traction and climbing ability.

Mostly sealed yard, tight turning, loads to 3.5 t
→ Choose the 2.5 to 3.5 t 2WD for a tighter turn and lower running cost.

Light loads to 1.8 t, rough access, smaller site
→ Choose the 1.5 to 1.8 t 4WD for grip on a compact, agile truck.

Heavy loads to 10 t, wide off-road site, steep ramps
→ Choose the 5.0 to 10 t 2WD & 4WD for capacity and gradeability.

Rough Terrain Forklift FAQ

In what environments are rough terrain forklift most beneficial?
Rough terrain forklift is suitable for outdoor construction sites, industrial yards, and farms, particularly in areas with soft, uneven, or slick ground.

What is the typical service life of a rough terrain forklift?
A rough terrain machine can last 10 to 15 years under regular maintenance and proper usage.

How do I choose between 2WD and 4WD models?
4WD rough terrain forklifts are designed for extreme work conditions. They provide additional traction and control to deal with tough conditions. If work areas are moderately rough, a 2WD model is enough.
